Presbyopia is a natural, age-related condition that is estimated to affect 1.4 billion people by the year 2020, with this number expected to increase to 1.8 billion by 2050. Increases in visual demands, such as reading, working on computers and mobile devices, mean that eye care professionals need to be confident in ensuring that we can meet our patients' needs and expectations. Recent advancements in technology and education mean that we are in a position to understand how best to manage presbyopes in our practice. 

This article will provide a review of presbyopia and accommodation, risk factors, and best practice for communicating presbyopia to patients. In addition, current and future management strategies, including spectacle and contact lens options and surgical procedures for correcting presbyopia will be discussed.
