A time to reflect
Reflective exercise
The new reflective exercise requirement introduced by the General Optical Council (GOC) is part of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) cycle for optometrists and dispensing opticians.
This exercise is designed to encourage professionals to reflect on their learning and practice over the CPD cycle, through a discussion with a peer. It focuses on improving patient care by motivating eye care professionals to evaluate their practices and identify areas for improvement.
The reflective exercise is to be documented and carried out towards the end of the CPD cycle, ensuring that it encompasses a review of the registrant's PDP, completed CPD activities and sets a plan for future learning and professional development.
Who counts as a peer?
There are several options for peers as outlined by the GOC:
- another optometrist or dispensing optician
- a registrant’s employer
- another healthcare professional regulated by a statutory body (such as an ophthalmologist, orthoptist, nurse, physiotherapist, pharmacist)
A relative, close friend or an employee would not be considered a peer.
Where can the discussion take place?
The discussion with a peer may be held face-to-face, over a video call, or through a phone call.
How do you submit the reflective exercise?
Registrants must complete and submit an online form via MyCPD, accessible through MyGOC, to record their reflections and the details of their discussion with a peer. After submission, an email will be sent to the peer confirming the discussion.
What is the deadline?
Starting in July 2024, the form for the reflective exercise will be accessible. The reflective exercise must be completed and submitted via MyCPD, accessible through MyGOC, by 31 December 2024, the end of the 2022-24 cycle.
For more information on the reflective exercise and access to guidance templates, visit the GOC website.
